About CHIMERA
Jody White’s eighteenth year of life filled his heart with young love – only to break him apart. Diagnosed with a rare form of Acute Leukaemia, he was given just two weeks to live
After a whirlwind of intensive treatment, close to death, he dreamed his way into the care of a wizened cowboy, his own personal SWAT team, and a mysterious old crone who wanders the desert collecting wolf bones.
Chimera is an alchemical dive into teenage illness – a near-death initiation framed by the innate, mythic stories that touch all our lives.

Jody's moving and humbling account of his journey with leukemia is thoroughly engrossing and wonderfully written. You are there with him every step of the way. I really enjoyed how he manages to marry the visceral and brutal nature of the condition and treatment with his own internal journey. I feel like the teachings he gleaned from the experience have been passed on to me a a result of reading this book - an appreciation for being alive, however fleeting and a gratitude for the blessings of good health.

This is the story of a young man's rite of passage to the threshold of death and back, surviving acute leukaemia age 17. It is wonderfully descriptive, emotional and brutally honest. It also contains references to the numerous sources of inspiration and insight that Jody has drawn upon through his journey of recovery and self-discovery that can easily lead to another pile of books by your bedside once you have gobbled this up.
Congratulations Jody, for getting this far and this strong, and for writing such a great book.

This is a truly heart opening and viceral account of what was an endurance of body, mind and soul. Jody writes with honesty and openness and by doing so, invites us into a very real, human experience that changed not so much the course, but the quality, of his life. It is an initiation story of many realms, which is rare in our modern times, and one that inspires (I hope) others to journey into the depths of the underworld (whether diagnosed with an illness or not), knowing there are gifts down there to be shared with the world. Thank you for the courage to share yours Jody. Truly, this is a gift.

Naturally, this was a difficult and heart-breaking read. I think that goes without saying.
The courage it must take to put yourself out there like Jody does in this book is remarkable, and I found myself feeling like I was having a deep conversation with him rather than reading his book. The experience was truly humbling.
Beautifully written as well as inspiring and personal, this book covered aspects of living with cancer, treatments, and cancer itself that were completely new to me, and I've never read anything so inspiring and honest.
Eye-opening, raw, and important, this is one I think everyone needs to read in their lifetime.

A funny, poignant, beautiful tale of resilience, warmth, adventure and hilarity. This book was so perfect for me right now. I’m a single mum of 3 beautiful babies and the start of the year brought me face to face with an oncologist after discovering a lump. Thankfully I was given the all clear. However the fear I felt at not knowing what my future told reinforced to me that life is what you make of it and it’s something to be cherished. I truly wish Jody a life full of love, laughter and so many more adventures. Thank you for helping us to understand the fragile thread of life is to be cherished and never taken for granted.

This is really not my kind of genre but this book might just change that for me. This book was real and harsh but also beautiful and hopeful 😍 Loved this!

Stylistically golden, it’s impossible not to be touched by the beautifully rendered images, emotions, and experiences flooding the pages - many of which are so raw and terrible you wonder how Jody survived them.

Thank you so much for sharing your story as you traversed your way down unknown roads, not knowing where they would lead, and also for giving hope to those who may need it! A beautifully written and heartfelt memoir.

Having gone to the doctors for something that seemed so minor to discovering this, really makes you appreciate what we have each day. Jody has gone on to live a healthy, adventurous life and it’s really nice to read that after them giving him 2 weeks to live at the age of 17, there are happy endings that come.

This is a book like no other that I have read. Jody takes us through his illness and his treatment with such clarity, and covering so many aspects of his emotional, and sometimes medication fuelled, inner world that it literally feels like living (and dying) each moment with him.
The narration of the post recovery time is particularly poignant and honest.
Well done Jody! What an extraordinary achievement the writing of this has been.
I highly recommend it.
Excellent on all levels.

Cancer, leukemia, chemotherapy; words we're all familiar with but not necessarily what you might want to read about. Except Jody has written about his own teenage experience of them in such a way that I literally couldn't put this book down.
Beautifully written, this powerful and moving memoir is full of hope and positivity and despite the author being faced with many frankly traumatic treatments, his need to recover and get his life back on track pulled him through.
Inspirational.

This book is one of the most riveting I’ve read in a while. I really couldn’t put it down. Although a serious and at times emotional read, it’s an honest account of a journey through serious illness as a teenager. It explores the role of family and medical professionals as an integral partnership in illness and recovery. But don’t be put off by the subject matter, it’s an uplifting and life affirming read.
